THE Papua New Guinea government says it's working with developers of the Liquified Natural Gas project to expand broadband network into rural areas.
This comes as mobile phone company Digicel launches a new broadband service in PNG, making the internet more accessible to anyone with a 3G-enabled handset.
Digicel broadband will initially be available in the highly populated centres.
The Secretary of PNG's Department of Communication and Information, Henao Iduhu, says efforts to bring broadband internet to rural areas are being pinned on the construction of a 750-kilometre fibre optic cable.
"LNG developers have also applied to secure broadband access in its own community through the LNG corridor and townships where the developers are located. So there is an effort to bring broadband access on internet to the community."
